11th Energy Saving Day February 13, 2015

Launched in 2005 as a symbolic initiative by the RAI Radio 2 program Caterpillar, M’illumino di meno is now one of the most widespread and well-known awareness campaigns on energy saving. Over the years, it has gained the support of the Prime Minister’s Office and the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of Land and Sea.

Now in its 11th edition, it marks a day when everyone is invited to symbolically turn off lights and switch on alternative energy sources. Municipalities, schools, businesses, associations, and citizens can all participate by helping reduce energy consumption and waste.

How?There are many ways: change a lightbulb, ride your bike to work, turn off lights (at home, in offices, classrooms, shop windows, and monuments), or switch off unnecessary electrical devices.

A long list of Italian cities (including Genoa, Florence, Udine, Palermo, Turin, Treviso, Ravenna, Parma, Salerno, Bologna, Milan, Venice, Catania, Rimini) has already joined the event to promote best practices in energy saving and sustainability.

All metropolitan cities and municipalities that have joined the initiative will participate in the “energy silence” by turning off public lighting in tourist areas and well-known monuments, raising awareness about the importance of consuming less, better, and differently (through renewable energy and technological innovation), and reducing visual and CO2 pollution. Many cities will also highlight “virtuous” light points, meaning LED lights that have replaced older lamps. To ensure the success of the event, people are encouraged to turn off lights in squares, shop windows, offices, classrooms, and private homes. On the event’s website, there is a list of associations, businesses, municipalities, private individuals, and schools involved, along with related programs and public events.
