This three-year project involves 52 students. The Province of Treviso, a project partner, offers young students the opportunity to engage in the design and development of social communication campaigns focused on promoting gender equality between men and women.
The students’ work will be published on the websites of the Province of Treviso, the school, other public and private project partners, and the relevant municipalities in Treviso.
Here’s how Ackilea, Anna Gaia, Gaia, and Maria Elisa explain their commitment:
“The task we are undertaking addresses a topic that is very close to our hearts: gender equality.
Participating in this project allows us to become more aware, by consulting statistical data and delving deeper into the topic, of the barriers to professional freedom that women face, such as obstacles to accessing jobs, particularly when women have young children, lower wages for equal work, and more.
According to the study Women, Business, and the Law 2018 by the World Bank, gender inequality negatively impacts global growth.
Discrimination thus affects 2.7 billion women in the workforce… Despite the introduction of some reforms and increased gender awareness, researchers found that women still face a range of barriers that limit their access to work, credit, and property. In 104 economies, particularly, women are not allowed to work at night or in certain industrial sectors such as construction, energy, and agriculture. This limits the choices of 2.7 billion women and their earning potential. In OECD countries, the income loss due to gender inequality is 15%, with 40% of this tied to unequal opportunities in entrepreneurship,” as highlighted by Panorama in an article on April 5, 2018.
“Therefore, we want to carry out a sensitization campaign targeted at people of all ages, emphasizing that women should be free to step out of the domestic sphere and compete equally with male colleagues, based on their abilities and dreams.
We are honored to be part of this project, which aims to promote cultural growth through the respect for equal opportunities.”
The activities in the Province began on June 11 with the presentation of provincial equality bodies.
On June 12, the activities continued with a Social Communication Training Day, organized with the valuable collaboration of the Fondazione Pubblicità Progresso of Milan, with speeches from President Alberto Contri and Dr. Roberto Bernocchi.
“This is probably the first project of its kind in Italy: a three-year school-work alternation entirely dedicated to issues of equality and inclusion,” said Provincial Councilor Lisa Tommasella, who is responsible for equal opportunities. Together with President Antonella De Giusti and the Provincial Commission for Equal Opportunities, they supported the initiative. “It will be a unique opportunity for our young people,” continued the Councilor, “because, thanks to the network of equality bodies and the support of various agencies, students will have lessons in the classroom and external internships at the Provincial Equal Opportunities Office, the Provincial Equal Opportunities Councilor’s Office at Sant’Artemio, and the Filcams CGIL union offices. They will learn not only to listen to citizens’ needs but also to understand the vast issue of discrimination, both in the workplace and in domestic life. Gender equality is still not fully achieved, and they will learn about the influence of stereotypes on diversity, work-family balance, maternity, gender-based violence, and support for vulnerable individuals through theoretical and practical experiences that will guide them until graduation, helping them develop skills and awareness of social issues.”
President Stefano Marcon, addressing the students on June 12, expressed his welcome and appreciation for the school’s and students’ efforts to promote equal opportunities.
“Let’s enrich ourselves through our reciprocal differences,” is a quote by Paul Valéry.
