ASviS Report: Giovannini, Italy is lagging behind, a concrete action plan and measures are urgently needed to ensure the sustainability of development in compliance with international commitments
“With over 4.5 million people living in absolute poverty, a female employment rate below 50%, over 2 million young people who are neither studying nor working; with investments in research and development of just over 1% of GDP, school dropout rates of 27.3% for children of less educated parents compared to 2.7% for children of university-educated parents and a rich-poor gap among the most unbalanced in the OECD area; with significant gender inequalities and unacceptable violence against women (76 femicides since the beginning of the year); with all fish species at risk, significant environmental degradation especially in certain areas of the country; with 36% of people living in high seismic risk areas and a high mortality rate due to air pollution in urban centers; with a too slow transition to renewable sources compared to the Paris agreements, Italy demonstrates that it is still very far from the path of sustainability outlined by the 2030 Agenda and the commitments signed at the UN a year ago. And yet we know that we have no alternative to guarantee a future for the country”. This was stated by the Spokesperson of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development, Enrico Giovannini, presenting today to the Chamber of Deputies the ASviS Report on “Italy and the Sustainable Development Goals”, the first analysis of Italy’s situation with respect to the 17 Goals and 169 Targets of the 2030 Agenda.
