A tumor originates when a cell accumulates a series of DNA damages, thus losing control of its ability to replicate and finds an environment favorable to uncontrolled multiplication. A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that in less than twenty years, cases will increase from 14 million in 2012 to 22 million in 2030. Currently, every year worldwide, 8.2 million people die from cancer, of which 4 million prematurely (between 30-69 years). The report shows that, although treatments have made significant progress, they cannot be considered the only weapon to solve the problem and that it is instead necessary to dedicate more effort to prevention and early diagnosis to limit this alarming increase in the spread of cancer in the world. In fact, it has been calculated that if everyone adopted a healthy lifestyle, about one in three cases of cancer could be prevented.
It is therefore essential to implement information and education initiatives aimed at the population to encourage them to take care of their health with a healthy and correct lifestyle. Among these, World Cancer Day is an opportunity to unite the world population in the fight against cancer with the aim of saving millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and educating about the disease. The 2015 edition, with the slogan “Not beyond us”, proposes a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, emphasizing that solutions exist and are within everyone’s reach: early diagnosis, treatment, and cure.
